The Centenary of The Balfour Declaration exhibition E-mail

An exhibition titled The Centenary of the Balfour Declaration is currently on display at the Israel Academy of Science and Humanities in Jerusalem.

It assembles a wide range of historical documents, texts and objects lent by archives and collections located in Israel and the UK. The items on display bear witness to past events and to their changing meanings during the course of the intervening century. Through letters, copies of the local press, as well as information cards highlighting the main players at the time, the Balfour Declaration, a letter sent by British Foreign Secretary Arthur James (later Lord) Balfour to Lord Lionel Walter Rothschild on 2 November, 1917, is explored.

The 67-word text of the Declaration represented a delicate balancing of the views of politics, public figures and intellectuals, Jews and non-Jews in Great Britain and around the world, expressed at meetings and via correspondence, behind the scenes and in the open, at conventions and in the press. Guided tours can be organised for groups upon request.
