New Prime Minister's China connection E-mail

Ehud Olmert, the new Prime Minister, had been Ariel Sharon’s closest ally. Olmert served in the Israel Defense Forces first as a military correspondent and then in the Golani combat brigade.

He was a 2-term Mayor of Jerusalem, the first member of Likud to hold the position. He headed Likud’s election campaign in 2003 and subsequently negotiated the coalition agreement.

Ohel Leah Synagogue gets new rabbi E-mail

Rabbi Martin van den Bergh has been appointed as the new  Rabbi of Hong Kong’s Ohel Leah Synagogue.
He is a native of Holland who was raised in Zimbabwe and educated in London at Montefiore College.  

Rabbi van den Bergh has served extensively as a community rabbi in more than one large congregation  in the United Kingdom.

How israelis voted in the recent election E-mail

Israeli citizens voted on 28 March, giving 29 Knesset seats to Kadima, a new party formed by Ariel Sharon and headed by Ehud Olmert. Voter turnout – at 63% – was the  lowest in Israel’s history.

It may not have been such a surprise that Kadima gained so many seats, or that Labour – with 19 – came in second. But the strong showing for Yisrael Beiteinu, led by Russian immigrant Avigdor Lieberman, surprised many.
