Minyan held for the King of Thailand E-mail

The Jewish community of Bangkok was given a rare honour, permission to go to the hospital where the King was recovering so that they could pray for his recovery.  A Minyan was held in Siriraj Hospital.

On 20 July, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, of Thailand, underwent an operation to treat a lumbar spinal stenosis.  The Jewish community of Thailand, under the leadership of Rabbi Yosef C. Kantor, was permitted to offer prayers of recovery.

Hong Kong gearing up for the Jewellery Fair E-mail

Asia’s biggest jewellery and watch fair will take place during September. The fair is the single largest display of the world’s jewellery and dual products in the region.

The event will be showcasing a wide range of products from fine finishing jewellery, polished diamonds and gem stones, to all varieties of pearls, jewellery time pieces and other jewellery making equipment products.  Other small regional fairs will follow this fall.

Fighting with funds: Financial aid underway in the North E-mail

In the aftermath of the war, Israel has begun the daunting task of rebuilding the nation.  Jewish agencies around the world have rushed to aid the nation from the early days of the conflict onward. Tremendous donations have been sent, humanitarian agencies mobilised and solidarity missions deployed.

Campaigns have been initiated to provide immediate aid to the North in order to assist small businesses, educational institutions, tourism and families.

Chabad plans for new center in Guangzhou E-mail

To cope with the increasing number of businessmen making their way into Guangzhou, the need for a new center is  being considered.

It is estimated that 200 Jews now call Guangzhou their home. The Chabad synagogue is run by Rabbi Eliyahu Rozenberg. While Chabad entered Guangzhou three years ago, Rabbi Rozenberg took on this post only a year ago.

Shanghai Jewish Center formally dedicated E-mail

The Ohel Yisrael Shanghai Jewish Center’s formal dedication drew international  guests, local residents and dignitaries to witness this historic day for China’s Jewish community.

On June 11, a large group gathered to take part in the formal dedication. The distinguished guest list included Rabbi Shlomo Amar, Chief Rabbi of Israel and rabbinic leaders from throughout Asia, Shanghai’s Rabbi Shalom Greenberg, and local dignitaries.  The Center’s donors, Mr. and Mrs. George Bohbot, of Hong Kong, and Mr. and Mrs. Max Azria, of California, were also in attendance.
