Israel recalls Australian ambassador after racist remarks E-mail

Ambassador Naftali Tamir was recalled back to Israel following the publication of racist remarks.  He was quoted commenting that, “We don’t have yellow skin and slanted eyes…Asia is basically the yellow race.”

This is apparently the first time an Israeli envoy to Australia has been recalled.  Tamir was appointed to the Australian post in February 2005 and also serves as non-resident ambassador to New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.  He is a seasoned diplomat having also served as the Israeli envoy to Finland and filling roles in Washington and Tokyo.

Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks tours Asia Print E-mail

Cheif Rabbi of the Britsh Commonwealth, Sir Jonathan Sacks, will pay an annual visit to the Hong Kong Communty as part of his tour of the region.

Rabbi Sacks will attend a number of functions. The highlight of the Chief Rabbi’s Hong Kong visit will be the induction of Rabbi Martin van den Bergh, at Ohel Leah, on 4 November.

A reason to celebrate for Guangzhou E-mail

Chabad of Guangzhou recently celebrated the dedication of a new Sefer Torah.  This small community, established in 2003, serves a small permanent community as well as large numbers of businessmen traveling throughout the region.

The dedication drew 250 participants, far exceeding all expectations.

Warsaw photo exhibition of Jews seeking refuge in Shanghai Print E-mail

A photo exhibition of Jews seeking refuge in Shanghai opened in Warsaw.  Shanghai residents helped house more than 30,000 Jewish refugees seeking escape from the horrors of World War II.  

The exhibition features over 150 photographs and is said to be well attended by the Warsaw community.  Shanghai was the only community after 1938 that accepted Jews without a visa.  It became an important and permanent part of Jewish history and ensured the survival of many victims.

Speaker of the Knesset visits Hong Kong E-mail

The Honourable Mrs. Dalia Itzik, Speaker of the Knesset and member of the Kadima party, visited Hong Kong 11-12 October. 

Mrs. Itzik is the first female speaker of the Israeli Parliament, elected to the position in May 2006.
