The New Year brings new spirit to the JWA E-mail

The Jewish Women's Association (JWA) of Hong Kong has started its new activity year with two new co-chairs bringing new spirit to this established fund raising organisation.

Daphna Peyser arrived in Hong Kong 15 months ago and joined the JWA board upon arrival. Her experience and background will be of great benefit to the association.

Shanghai's White Horse Cafe demolished E-mail

While China as a whole and Shanghai city itself was celebrating the 60 years, 'Party of the Party', the historic building housing the White Horse Cafe at the former Little Vienna, in this old Shanghai ghetto area, was lost to China's progress- at - all - cost demolitions teams.

The Shanghai ghetto, formally known as the Restricted Sector for Stateless Refugees, was an area of approximately one square mile in the Hong Kou District of Japanese-occupied Shanghai, where about 20,000 Jewish refugees lived.

Israelis hospitalised from food eaten in Nepal E-mail

Five Israelis in their 20's who recently returned from separate trips to Nepal have been hospitalised at the Sheba Medical Center at Tel Shomer after succumbing to stomach typhus.

In investigating the five cases, the hospital found that all of them had taken food at two Chabad centres in Nepal. A hospital source informed some leading Israeli newspapers that at these Chabad houses, the cooking was done by local employees, and one of the possible causes of the infection could be from one of them.

Water assistance for the Philippines E-mail

Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines, Zvi Vapni, visited Cebu last month and held discussions with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce specifically relating to developing Cebu and the entire country's water utility industry.

He expressed willingness to offer Israel's expertise in water infrastructure technology.

Peer wins first title in three years E-mail

Israeli tennis star Ms. Shahar Peer has claimed her fi rst WTA Tour title victory in China with victory in the Guangzhou Open in September.

Peer, who was seeded fifth, scored a straight sets win over Alberta Brianti from Italy having shown strong form throughout the tournament.
