UN Holocaust Memorial Day observed E-mail

To mark the United Nations International Holocaust Memorial Day, the Jewish Community of Hong Kong held a ceremony on 27 January at Elsa High School. The event was organised by the Jewish Community Centres Events Committee.

The memorial ceremony theme ‘The Face of Humanity’ The Righteous among the Nations was attended by invited guests from the Jewish community and representatives from the Hong Kong government including the Police Commissioner, Mr Tang King-shing and the Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs, Mrs Carrie Yau. In addition, consulates, embassy officials and students from international and Chinese schools.

Chief Rabbi of the UK in Hong Kong E-mail

Chief Rabbi of the UK and Commonwealth Lord Dr Jonathan Sacks and his wife Lady Sacks visited Hong Kong in January. His visit has become an annual event over many years.

Lord Sacks was recently made a Life Peer and took his seat in the House of Lords on 27 October 2009 and follows in the footsteps of the late Chief Rabbi Lord Jakobovits.

Vietnam and Israel to push for stronger ties E-mail

During the recent UN Climate Change conference held in Copenhagen, in December, Israeli President Mr Simon Peres met with the Prime Minister of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Tan Dung. Both shared common interest in developing stronger ties.

Peres commented on the opening of the Vietnamese Embassy in Israel in May 2009 which is aimed to promote multifaceted cooperation with the Jewish nation.

UJC commissions new Sefer Torah E-mail

To mark its 20th anniversary, Hong Kong’s United Jewish Congregation (UJC), the city’s only Progressive synagogue, has commissioned the writing of a new Sefer Torah. This will be the UJC’s third Sefer Torah.

The UJC has engaged Mr Jamie Shear, a Jerusalem-based sofer, who has previously written Sifrei Torah’s for communities in Canada, Israel, and the US. Shear recently visited the UJC sanctuary on 8 November and stayed for a week.

Former Ambassador Reuvan Merhav visits Asia E-mail

Reuvan Merhav was warmly greeted by members of the Hong Kong Jewish community. Some remember him very fondly when he served as the consul general. His first activity was to give a talk titled “Was Theodor Herzl right?” Israel at 61.

This perspective, was given at the Hong Kong Jewish Community Centre on 15 November.
