Philippines and Israel looking to strengthen ties E-mail

Philippines Tourism Minister Joseph H. Durano was on his first official visit to Israel last month, to attend the unveiling ceremony of the monument of the Philippines “Open Door Policy” towards Jews fleeing Nazi Germany during the Second World War.

Jewish Times Asia's lead story in the June 2009 issue covered the development of this special monument created by Filipino artist Jun Yee. The Philippines was one of the few countries in the world to unreservedly open its doors to Jews fl eeing Europe and over 1,200 Jews found refuge in Manila.

Foreign affairs diplomat in Beijing for expert talks E-mail

Mr Nimrod Barkan passed through Hong Kong 17 July, 2009, on his way to Beijing to engage in expert level dialogue with Chinese counterparts.

A career diplomat in the Israel Foreign service, he is the head of the Foreign Ministry Center for Policy Research and has held this position since 2006. Previously, he was the Director of the Bureau For World Jewish And Inter-religious Affairs (2002-2005).

India and Israel trade will triple says Israeli ambassador E-mail

Israeli Ambassador to India, Mr Mark Sofer, has said that India-Israeli trade ties are poised for the next major phase of growth, this will be largely triggered by the signing of a free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries.

Already much progress has been made in the FTA talks and it is just a matter of time before the agreement is concluded, he said. According to local India media Business Line, Mr Sofer was quoted saying “ the signing of an FTA will potentially triple the trade from US$4.2 billion to over US$12 billion within four or five years.

Wedding reception held in the Philippines E-mail

The Philippine Jewish community celebrated a recent simchah, with the marriage of Isaac Ofek and Mary Rose Alcaneses. The wedding reception took place on May 10, 2009, at the Manila Peninsula Hotel.

The couple were married in Israel March 16. It was defi nitely one of the most lavish events and guests agreed that it was about the most grand in anyone's memory. There were two bands, and one of the many highlights was the groom playing the saxophone.

Beth Elisheva Synagogue planning a major renovation E-mail

Bangkok's purpose built synagogue, which is currently celebrating its sixteenth year, will announce plans shortly to redesign the entire building premises.

This includes a bigger social hall, upgrading the air conditioning units and installing an elevator. The building was built in the 1980s and has its own enclosure with plenty of space for more facilities.
