Two Israelis sentenced to death in Thailand E-mail

Two Israelis convicted of drug trafficking were sentenced to death by a court in Thailand. The men were caught with 23,000 Ecstasy pills nearly one year ago. It was reported by the Jerusalem Post that these drugs were destined for the United States and Italy.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said that she was considering intervening on behalf of the two Israelis unless an appeal was granted. The sentence of the two Israelis comes after other highly publicised cases of foreign nationals being sentenced to death following arrests for drug trafficking.

Friedman in Hong Kong E-mail

The Asia Society coordinated a luncheon event featuring Thomas Friedman on 16 December 2008. The event, held at the JW Marriott Hotel in Pacific Place, introduced Friedman's latest work, Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution and How it Can Renew America.

The World is Flat, his last book, has been on the New York Times best seller list for over sixty weeks and has sparked a national debate. Friedman has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize three times and is a best selling author.

Israeli envoys convene in Bangkok E-mail

In early December, Aaron Abramovich, the director- General of Israel's Foreign Ministry, headed a meeting with Israeli representatives stationed in 16 countries throughout the region.

This was reportedly the first such joint meeting of Israeli's Asian envoys in 13 years.

Shanghai's new Israeli Consul General looks forward to strengthening ties E-mail

The community of Shanghai has recently welcomed their new Consul General, Mr. Jackie Elden. Consul General Elden brings a number of years of experience in Foreign Service to the posting with experience most recently as the Head of Bureau.

In an interview with Jewish Times Asia, Consul General Elden indicated that his first impressions of Shanghai were that, “Shanghai is a welcoming city, very international yet very Chinese, a great combination of modernisation and tradition.”

Interfaith leaders demand UN special session on terror E-mail

Representatives of Hindu and Sikh faiths join Jewish and Muslim leaders to stress grassroots and interfaith efforts as the best strategies to break diplomatic and political gridlock in fighting terror.

In wake of the Mumbai massacre, the Simon Wiesenthal Center in the US convened a special press briefing to call on the international community to urge the United Nations to confront suicide terrorism by holding a Special Session of the General Assembly to tackle this crisis, in the same way it has tackled Global Poverty and AIDS.
