Judaism amongst 'Religions for Peace' in Manila E-mail

The Asian Conference on Religions for Peace (ACRP) was held in Manila with the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas and the Catholic Bishops Conference as hosts on 17 October 2008.

The conference, as in past efforts, united world religious leaders, including Jewish representatives.

Israelis in unusual labour dispute E-mail

In October, 15 Israeli project supervisors were held hostage on West Caicos, a remote Caribbean island, in an unusual twist to a labor dispute. Chinese construction workers, demanded a ransom for their release or their full pay.

All of the Israelis were employees of Ashtrom and were overseeing the construction of a large tourism project, the Molasses Reef project featuring a 125 key hotel, a marina and condominiums, work was halted as the result of the inability of an American bank to meet funding requirements in light of the current financial crisis.

Senior Chinese party official meets with Israel Labour Party E-mail

In Beijing, a senior official from the Communist Party of China (CPC), Liu Yunshan, met with a delegation from the Israel Labor Party (ILP) in order to reinforce the strength of party to party relationship on 17 October 2008.

Liu Yunshan, head of the CPC Central Committee Publicity Department, issued a statement expressing belief in the continued future growth of the China-Israel relationship and the strengthening of bilateral relations.

MASHAV signs agreement with Nepal development bank E-mail

The Centre for International Cooperation (MASHAV) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel and the Agricultural Development Bank Ltd. (ADBL) of Nepal recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding for three years to enhance cooperation between the two organisations.

The agreement to this effect was signed by H.E. Mr. Dan Stav, Ambassador of Israel to Nepal and Mr. Yogeswor Pant, General Manager of ADBL on behalf of MASHAV and ADBL.

Eye from Zion plans additional Vietnam aid E-mail

Eye from Zion, an Israeli humanitarian organisation that provides free medical help focusing on ophthalmology, is coordinating an aid mission to Vietnam.

In March 2008, the Israeli team from Eye from Zion performed well over one hundred free and vital eye surgeries in Vietnam.  Eye from Zion is planning on holding an additional medical relief mission in December. The group of visiting physicians will represent some of the fi nest Israeli and Jewish eye surgeons worldwide.
