Three Israeli teens arrested on drug charges in Japan E-mail

Three Israeli teenagers were detained at Tokyo’s international airport after authorities found large quantities of ecstasy pills in antiques they brought in from Amsterdam.

The three high school students alleged that they did not know there were drugs in the antiques and had agreed to carry luggage in exchange for money for their airfare.

Bar-Ilan awards Honorary Doctorate to Taiwan's Yuan Tseh Lee E-mail

Ramat Gan, Israel – Israel’s Bar-Ilan University will confer an Honorary Doctorate upon Taiwan’s Professor Yuan Tseh Lee at a ceremony marking 60 years of Israeli independence.

The Award will be presented on 3 June 2008 on the Bar- Ilan University campus in the framework of the University’s 53rd annual Board of Trustees meetings.

Professor Lee, the 1986 Nobel laureate in Chemistry, is being recognised for his groundbreaking work on the dynamics of chemical elementary processes, his major contributions towards higher education in Taiwan, and his efforts to promote scientific interaction between Taiwan and Israel.

Jewish response to Myanmar's devastation E-mail

Immediately following the 3 May 2008 Cyclone Nargis, Israel responded by sending desperately needed funds as well as teams from the IDF’s highly trained search-andrescue team and also a ten member team of top doctors and nurses.

A spokesman from the Myanmar Embassy in Tel Aviv expressed gratitude to the Israeli government and non-governmental organisations that answered the call for aid in the wake of disaster.

Jewish presence at children's peace forum in Japan E-mail

The Global Network of Religion for Children (GNRC) Third Forum, held on 24-26 May, brought together representatives from world religions and unifi ed nations in the mission to build a better world for our children. The three-day event was centered on the theme Learning to Share: Values, Action, Hope.

It is the only global interfaith network exclusively dedicated to securing the rights and wellbeing of children worldwide. A highlight of the forum was the launch of a manual for educators entitled, Learning to Live Together: An Intercultural and Interfaith Programme for Ethics Education.

Chelsea football team able to travel in Malaysia E-mail

There was doubt over the feasibility of Chelsea’s participation in the pre-season tour of Malaysia because two members of the club, manager Avram Grant and defender Tal Ben-Haim are Israeli.

English premier team Chelsea indicated that they would not travel without these team members. Malaysia and Israel do not have diplomatic relations and Israelis need special permission to travel to the country.
