Zubari wins the medal but loses face E-mail

Israel’s Shahar Zubari, though the only medalist for the Israeli team in the Beijing Olympics, has become one of the most unpopular athletes on the team, after he was quoted making some highly inappropriate and insulting remarks regarding the Chinese.

In an interview published in one of Israel’s leading newspapers Yediot Aharanot on 5 September 2008, Zubari refered to the Chinese negatively. He was quoted making additional offcolour and offensive remarks regarding China and the Chinese.

Miss Israel explores Vietnam following pageant E-mail

Miss Israel Shunit Faragi participated in the Miss Universe 2008 contest in Vietnam in July 2008. She later had the opportunity to travel throughout the country and gained a greater appreciation of Vietnamese culture and people.

Ms. Faragi participated in a cultural exchange with the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in Hanoi on 18 July. During the exchange, she answered many questions relating to Israel’s culture and the lifestyle offered to young people. She also candidly responded to questions with respect to her own future plans.

The open exchange allowed Vietnamese to gain a greater exposure to Israeli culture and in turn will work towards promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the Israeli and Vietnamese people.

Bangkok hosts its first Progressive High Holiday services E-mail

Rabbi Joel Oseran, Vice President of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, will be in Bangkok to lead High Holiday services for Progressive Jews in Bangkok. Rosh Hashanah Services will be held on the evening of 29 September and the morning of 30 September at the Davis Hotel.

Yom Kippur Services will be held, also at the Davis Hotel for Kol Nidre on 8 October and beginning for Shacharit on 9 October at 10 am. Their Yom Kippur service will conclude with a communal breakfast.

Israel Embassy launches Hindu and Urdu website E-mail

The Embassy of Israel, New Delhi has launched what may be the only foreign ministry website in Hindu and Urdu. Israel’s Ambassador to India, Mark Sofer, indicated that they wanted to introduce Israel to a larger cross segment of the Indian population.

He hopes that more people will become acquainted with Israel’s vibrant contemporary society, growing economy, rich and diverse culture.

Philippines workers attend course in Israel E-mail

Twenty five extension workers, from selected areas in the Philippines attended a three week course on vegetable production and post-harvest technology over the summer in Shefayim, Israel.
