Hong Kong's matzah mix-up E-mail

The Jewish community got a surprise when they visited the JCC’s Koshermart to purchase their usual Passover provisions this year.

The eager crowd queued up even before the shop opened knowing that many items sell out within the first few hours. They were surprised when they were charged US$15 per box of matzah.

Vietnam's Vu Dung announces opening of embassy E-mail

Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Vu Dung paid an official visit to Israel from 31 March to 3 April.

While in Jerusalem he met with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and offi cially announced the Vietnamese decision to open an embassy in Israel within the next few months, in time for the countries celebrate their anniversary of 15 years of diplomatic ties.

Israeli in Chinese jail released on bail E-mail

Israeli businessman, Dato Mansharove, was released from a Chinese jail on 18 April 2008 after being detained for nearly four months for allegedly attempting to smuggle hundreds of second-hand mobile phones into China.

Mansharove was arrested, by Chinese customs offi cials, late December as he crossed the border from Hong Kong into Shenzhen.

Israel's Ciechanover gives lecture at Mahidol University E-mail

Professor Aaron J. Ciechanover, 2004 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, delivered a lecture entitled, Why our proteins have to die so we shall live, on 10 April 2008 at the Faculty of Science, Mahidol University of India.

The lecture, part of an ongoing dialogue for peace programme organised by the Vienna- based International Peace Foundation, attracted over 400 participants.

Philippines Roxas recognised for role in Israel independence E-mail

In a recent ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the death of the late President of the Phillipines, Manuel Acuña Roxas, his role in the recognition of the State of Israel was highlighted.

Roxas died of a heart attack on 15 April 1948 just one month before Israel’s declaration of Independence on 18 May 1948. Israel Ambassador to the Philippines, Zvi Vapni, spoke at a wreath laying ceremony commemorating the late president and acknowledged his role in the recognition of the State of Israel.
