Philippines Roxas recognised for role in Israel independence E-mail

In a recent ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the death of the late President of the Phillipines, Manuel Acuña Roxas, his role in the recognition of the State of Israel was highlighted.

Roxas died of a heart attack on 15 April 1948 just one month before Israel’s declaration of Independence on 18 May 1948. Israel Ambassador to the Philippines, Zvi Vapni, spoke at a wreath laying ceremony commemorating the late president and acknowledged his role in the recognition of the State of Israel.

Malaysian born convert denied Israeli citizenship E-mail

A Malaysian-born American citizen has applied for permission to immigrate to Israel with his wife, an Israeli citizen who was living overseas, in an attempt to excercise his right under the Law of Return.

Syloke Soong was born to a Christian family in Kuala Lumpur.He gave up his Malaysian citizenship and has not returned to the country in 15 years. The computer programmer joined a Reform congregation in Maine and converted to Judaism in 2001.

Operation Matzoh Meal reaches soldiers in Asia E-mail

The Rockland/Orange New York District of the Jewish War Veterans (JWV) sent 122 care packages filled with Passover essentials as part of Operation Matzoh Meal.

The packages containing matzah, macaroons, canned gefi lte fish, grape juice, a Passover Haggadah or guide to the seder, snacks and toiletries have made their way to Jewish soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Guam, Japan, Singapore and South Korea.

Zaki Shalom participates in symposium in New Delhi E-mail

Defence and National Security Expert, Professor Zaki Shalom, visited India from 16 to 18 March 2008 for participation in a Symposium on Middle East politics in New Delhi. Professor Shalom also visited Mumbai and Hyderabad during his stay in India.

At a lunch organised by Consul General Mr. Daniel Zonshine, Professor Shalom said that terrorism can defeated successfully if the international community fi ghts it collectively. He also shared his views on a number of issues that included nuclear disarmament, national security, combating terrorism and Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Carmel School celebrating a year of achievements E-mail

Carmel School of Hong Kong held its 17th annual fund raising dinner on 10 April 2008. The event was coordinated by dinner cochairs Debra Kalmanowitz-Penkin and Sharon Klier. Along with their team of fellow PTA volunteers, the Jewish Community Centre’s Garden Room was transformed into an elegant dining setting.

This year’s theme of the Beijing Olympics was beautifully coordinated into the dinner’s invitation and decorations and the room was abuzz over the exciting silent auction items up for sale. But despite, the careful attention to details, it was the children that stole the show. All eyes were on the bright glow of their ‘Olympic’ medals strung on blue ribbons as they sang and danced for the audience of parents, teachers and community members.
