First Mikvah to be built in China since World War II |

The Rohr Family Chabad Community Centre in Beijing is building China’s first mikvah since World War II.
The facility, designed by architect He Wei, will include some distinctive Chinese touches, including a pagoda and carved dome ceiling. “There’s no way anyone would mistake this mikvah for one in Brooklyn,” commented Rabbi Shimon Freundlich.

Rabbi Arik Ascherman and Rabbi Yechiel Grenimann addressed an interested group at the home of Rabbi Michael Schwartz of Hong Kong’s United Jewish Congregation.
The two rabbis spoke passionately about the work they do with different segments of the Israeli population. The group’s most high-profile, and not coincidentally, more controversial, work is among Israeli Arabs and Palestinians.

Reunion of Shanghai Jews |

Leah Jacob Garrick was in Hong Kong for a Shabbat on her way to a renunion of Shanghai Jewish families that took place in early May.
Mrs. Garrick’s great-grandfather was brought to Shanghai by the Sassoon family, to serve as chazzan of Beth Aharon Synagogue.

Zukerman playing in Asia |

Israeli violinist, pedagogue and conductor Pinchas Zukerman is currently playing a series of concerts around the Asia region.
The tour includes Singapore, with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra; Seoul with the Seoul Philharmonic; Nagoya with the Nagoya Philharmonic; a solo recital in Taipei, and Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta on 14 June (Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall). He will also give master classes at the Shanghai Conservatory from 6-9 June.

New beast on the Asian Kosher menu? |

Kosher diners in New York and other American cities have been enjoying kosher bison for years, and now, says Rabbi Shlomo Amar, diners in Jerusalem can as well. The ruling declares that the short-horned water buffalo native to Israel are kosher.
But shortly after the news hit, Rabbi Yosef Elyashuv, another leading authority, declared that as there was no tradition of the animal ever being schected and consumed in Israel, the animal could not be kosher.
