Rabbi Shlomo Amar, Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, during his trip to Shanghai held a conference of local rabbinic leaders.
This was the Chief Rabbi’s first visit to Shanghai and second visit to the region. Rabbi Shlomo Amar visited Thailand on his last regional trip.

Moshe Safdie designs Singapore's new casino complex |

Singapore has recently reversed its 40 year ban on casino operations and will begin construction of the Marina Sands Casino. Moshe Safdie, world renowned architect, is responsible for the design.
U.S. casino operators have been rushing to expand into the Asian market and the Las Vegas Sands Casino recently won the license to build in Singapore. Three other corporations competed for the license: MGM Mirage and Capita Land Ltd, Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. and Keppel Land Ltd, and Genting International PLC and Star Cruises Ltd.

First Mikvah to be built in China since World War II |

The Rohr Family Chabad Community Centre in Beijing is building China’s first mikvah since World War II.
The facility, designed by architect He Wei, will include some distinctive Chinese touches, including a pagoda and carved dome ceiling. “There’s no way anyone would mistake this mikvah for one in Brooklyn,” commented Rabbi Shimon Freundlich.

Rabbis For Human Rights |

Rabbi Arik Ascherman and Rabbi Yechiel Grenimann addressed an interested group at the home of Rabbi Michael Schwartz of Hong Kong’s United Jewish Congregation.
The two rabbis spoke passionately about the work they do with different segments of the Israeli population. The group’s most high-profile, and not coincidentally, more controversial, work is among Israeli Arabs and Palestinians.

Reunion of Shanghai Jews |

Leah Jacob Garrick was in Hong Kong for a Shabbat on her way to a renunion of Shanghai Jewish families that took place in early May.
Mrs. Garrick’s great-grandfather was brought to Shanghai by the Sassoon family, to serve as chazzan of Beth Aharon Synagogue.
