The 18th Maccabiah Games, the largest sporting event in the history of the State of Israel, will take place from 13-23 July 2009.
With an estimated participation of 5,300 Jewish athletes from 64 countries and 2,000 athletes from Israel.

Former president Ephraim Katzir dies |

Professor Ephraim Katzir, the fourth president of the State of Israel and one of its greatest scientists, died on Saturday night (May 30) at the age of 93. A world-renowned biochemist and physicist, Prof. Katzir served as Israel's president from 1973 to 1978.
“He was an outstanding man, a world famous scientist who made an extraordinary contribution to the security of the State of Israel,†President Shimon Peres said of Katzir following his passing.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in his statement that Katzir showed his “commitment to the State of Israel in everything he did,†and praised him as a “pioneer†in his academic fields.

Holocaust era heroine, Irena Sendler, dies |

Irena Sendler, a Polish catholic, is a true heroine who saved the lives of 2,500 Jewish children during the Holocaust, died on 12 May 2008 at the age of 98. Sendler smuggled thousands of Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto between October 1940 and April 1943.
Along with a team of about twenty volunteers she was able to rescue the children by carrying them out in suitcases, boxes, body bags, tool boxes and coffi ns. She gave them new identities and placed them with adoptive parents.

Clinton & Obama both have the Jewish vote |

A recent Gallop poll shows that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are virtually matched in a race for Jewish support. According to the recent poll, 48% of the Jewish Democratic voters favour Clinton to Obama’s 43%.
According to the poll, Clinton would win 66 percent of the Jewish vote to 27 percent for John McCain, in the general election, and Obama would win 61 percent to McCain’s 32 percent.

Bahrain names Jewish woman as envoy to US |

Houda Nonoo, a Jewish woman, was recently named as the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to Washington, D.C, making her likely the first Jewish envoy from an Arab nation.
Ms. Nonoo was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that she was proud of this appointment, “first of all as a Bahraini.”
