3,700 year old fortification exposed in the City of David

A huge fortification more than 3,700 years old, which is ascribed to the Canaanites (Middle Bronze Age 2), was uncovered in archaeological excavations.

The Israel Antiquities Authority is currently conducting excavations in the walls around Jerusalem National Park in the City of David, with funding provided by the Ir David Foundation.

One of the oldest synagogues in the world exposed

A synagogue fromthe Second Temple period (50 BCE-100 CE) was exposed in archaeological excavations the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) is conducting at a site slated for the construction of a hotel on Migdal beach.

In the middle of the synagogue is a stone that is engraved with a seven-branched menorah (candelabrum), the likes of which have never before been seen.

The main hall of the synagogue is 120 square metres in area and its stone benches, which served as seats for the worshippers, were built up against the walls of the hall. Its fl oor was made of mosaic and its walls were treated with colored plaster frescos.

Roman building exposed in the ongoing excavation at the walls around Jerusalem

A spacious 1800 year old edifice from the Roman. period â€“ apparently a mansion that belonged to a wealthy individual â€“ was recently exposed in the ongoing Israel Antiquities Authority excavations at the Walls Around Jerusalem National Park in the City of David.

The excavations are being conducted at the site on behalf of the IAA and in cooperation with the Nature and Parks Authority, and are underwritten by the â€˜Ir David Foundation.
